Science and the Bible

People read Genesis and try to find scientific descriptions of how the universe and life were created. They complain that the Bible does not provide the scientific details of biochemistry, astronomy, physics and geology. They ask, "How can a God who created everything not know about these things?

However, they are missing the point.

The Bible is not a science book. It is a book about God. The purpose of Genesis chapter one is not to scientifically explain how the universe and life was created, its purpose is to tell us that God created everything -- and He did it just by speaking. God spoke the universe into existance.

If God wanted to provide the scientific details about everything, He could have. But image how big that book would be. We fill libraries with books and still they do not contain all knowledge.

There is scientific information throughout the Bible. However, it is not the subject of the Bible, it is incidental. For example, when God's glory is being described in Job 26:7, we get a perfect image of the earth hanging in space: "God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing."

More information about the Bible and science can be found on the Free Beginning web site.
