What is God Doing???
I've been thinking a lot about how God is working with us. We know that He is leading, teaching, and guiding us to become more like Jesus Christ. If you take a broad overview of history you can see God working in what appear to be 400 year cycles. There are times when He appears to be more actively involved with mankind. There are times when He appears to be giving us a "boot in the rear" to get us going. And there are times when He seems to let us alone--as though He is saying, "I've taught you what you need to know. Now it's time for you to try it on your own."
I'm starting to wonder if we are in a time when God is seeing how we do when let's us try living a Godly life on our own. And we don't seem to be doing well.
I'm continually struck by how strongly our culture works to pull us away from God. My family was watching a Milton Burle show a couple of evenings ago (for entertainment we watch old TV shows instead of what's on TV now--old TV show DVDs are just a buck at the Dollar Store). Carol Channing was a guest and she sang one of my favorite songs, Diamonds Are A Giirl's Best Friend. Then I started to think....
Are diamonds a girl's best friend? No. God is.
Does this song move us closer to Jesus or further away from Jesus? Further away.
Yes, it's just a song--not serious advice that we'd expect anyone to follow--on a TV show from 50 years ago. But what has happened is that all of these little things build up a culture that draws us away from God.
