How Does Someone Become A Christian?
Anyone can call themselves a Christian, but does that make them a Christian? No, it does not.
Is there something you need to do to become a Christian, such as be baptised? No, there is nothing you can do that will make you a Christian. And baptism does not make someone a Christian.
If you go to church regularly, or read the Bible all the time, doesn't that make you a Christian? No, there is NOTHING you can do that will make you a Christan.
To become a Christian there must be a change in heart. Here is what Scripture says in what is probably the most famous verse in the Bible:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it." - John 3:16
To have eternal life is something only Christians have, so this is referring to Christians. Being a Christian has something to do with believing in Jesus, the Son of God. But, what about Jesus are we to believe?
"God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for it, it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." - Ephesians 2:8-9
Salvation (eternal life) is not something we can get because of what we have done. It is a FREE gift from God. What is this gift?
"But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." - Romans 5:8
God's gift is His Son. Why did Jesus die for us? Because we do wrong. That is called sin. And God is fair and just, thus sin must be punished. That punishment is spiritual death (we all go through physical death). We all face the death penalty. But, God loves us. He wants us to be with Him. So He sent His Son, Jesus to take our place and pay the penalty we owe for our sins. That's why we say Jesus died for us. He died to pay the penalty we (you and I) owe for everything we have done wrong.
All we need to do is to accept this gift from God.
"For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." - Romans 10:9
This is who a Christian is. Someone for whom Jesus is Lord (which means we do our best to obey Him), and we trust Him for our salvation--in other words, that God will raise us from the dead just as He did Jesus.
