What is the purpose of the Ten Commandments?
To make us good?
To get us to heaven if we follow the Ten Commandments?
No. God's law is not given for either of those reasons. God's law does not condemn us. The purpose of God's law is enlighten us. It shows us that we are not acceptable to God, we can never truly be good, as God is good, through our own efforts.
The Ten Commandments, and all of God's moral law identifies and labels what the problem is. The law exposes the true condition of our heart--that we desire to disobey God. Without God's law we would not be aware of this.
"For no one can ever be made right in God's sight by doing what God's law commands. Rather, through the law we become conscience of our sin." - Romans 3:20
Who is the law for?
"We know these are good when they are used as God intended. But they were not made for people who do what is right. They are for people who are disobedient and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy…" - 1 Timothy 1:8-9
The purpose of God's law is to reveal to those who have turned their back on God, that they have a problem. It makes us aware, gives us the knowledge, that we can not be acceptable to God on our own human effort--because based on our own efforts we have all broken the God's laws on a regular basis.
But God loves us, ALL of us. So what can we do to become acceptable to God? Nothing. It's beyond our abilities. But God can and did do something. He sent His Son to pay the price for our sin so that, because of His blood, we are washed clean in the sight of God, becoming acceptable to God. We can't do it, but God did…
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
So can we now ignore God's law? Do we [Christians] still have to follow the law once it has filled its purpose of showing us that following God's law is impossible? No, we do not need to follow Gods law anymore. But we do follow God's law because of love. Christians follow His law not because we have to, but because we want to.
Jesus said, "If you love me, obey my commandments." - John 14:15
Jesus said, "Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me." - John 14:21

If you are going to quote then it would be appropriate to proof-read what you type. I am amazed that someone who claims the education you do runs so fast and loose with spelling and grammar.
"... through the law we become conscious of our sin." - Romans 3:20
Thank you for your thoughtfulness in pointing out a possible spelling error. I assume you are talking about the word "conscious".
There are two words that are pronounced the same, but have different meanings and are spelled differently. In this case the word "conscious", meaning mentally awake, alert, not asleep, is the correct spelling.
Just as a dictionary provides "the law" which shows us when a word is misspelled, through God's law we become aware of our inability to be good on our own. God's law reveals to us that we are asleep (not mentally awake) and because of that we allow Satan to move in and take control. This is how we become slaves to sin instead of having the freedom available in Christ.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness in pointing out my thoughtfulness.
How do you expect to be taken seriously if you don't quote correctly? It's not hard - yet you manage to inject brainless mistakes.
FYI: "conscious" and "conscience" differ not only in spelling and semantics, they are pronounced differently. If you think they have the same pronunciation then I suggest you check yourself in for some english lessons.
