The Crucifixion - Is The Bible True?

Yesterday was Good Friday, the day on which Jesus was crucified. As Jesus died Luke 23:44 tells us the following happened:

"By this time it was noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock. The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the thick veil hanging in the Temple was torn apart."

Matthew 27:45 also records the three hours of darkness and verse 51 gives us more detail about the curtain in the Temple: "At that moment the curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom."

If you are going to make up a story, you don't include details such as this, which can be easily be shown to be false by eye witnesses. The books of Matthew and Luke were written about 27-30 years after Jesus' death. His death was very public and many eye witnesses, including large numbers of Jews who wanted to prove the Gospel accounts wrong, were still alive. If events did not happen exactly as described in the Bible, the enemies of Christianity would have had the evidence they needed to destroy Christianity.

Consider the curtain in the Temple. This was the curtain that separated the Holy area, from the Holy of Holies. The Holy of Holies was an inner room into which only the high priest could go, and he only could go there once a year. When God dwelled in the Temple, He was in the Holy of Holies. Thus the curtain showed how we were separated from God. The tearing of the curtain, at the moment of Jesus' death, showed that we now have direct access to God. The curtain was an extremely important part of the Temple and the tearing of the curtain is an important theological event. If it didn't happen exactly as described in Matthew and Luke, the Jewish enemies of Christianity would have jumped all over that inaccuracy.

And it's the same with every other detail in the Gospel accounts of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Luke, in particular, provides many small details that would easily be recognized as false by the many eye witnesses. But, the truth and accuracy of the four Gospels did not provide an opening for the enemies of Christianity.
