"he meant he was a child of the universe"

That Jesus was the Son of God does not mean he was a child of the universe.

Saying we are children of the universe is called pantheism. Pantheism is any religious belief or philosophy that identifies the universe with god.

Christianity is not pantheistic.

There is one God, who reveals Himself in three persons: God the Father; God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Each "person" is God, but each has a different role. Part of what God the Son (Jesus) did was to come to earth and die on the cross so that our sins would be forgiven -- allowing us to join God in eternal life in heaven.
